Catterick Garrison is the UK’s largest British Army garrison, set in rural North Yorkshire in England just a few miles from Richmond. Originally created as a training camp in the First World War and expanded during the Second World War, it now houses thousands of service personnel and their families and functions like a small town with shops, schools and leisure facilities centred on military life.
Geographically it sits on low-lying countryside near the River Swale and has easy road links via the A1(M), with nearby attractions such as Catterick Racecourse and the older village of Catterick. The local economy and social scene revolve around the Ministry of Defence presence, creating a distinctive, often transient community where military culture and civilian life meet.
