The ward sits in North Yorkshire on the edge of the North York Moors, a mix of heather-clad moorland, deep wooded dales and a coastal fringe. It centres on the villages of Danby and Mulgrave, and contains historic features such as the ruins of Mulgrave Castle and the fortified manor known as Danby Castle, while the Moors Centre at Danby interprets the area's natural and cultural heritage.
Predominantly rural, the ward’s economy is built around sheep farming, forestry and tourism, with walkers and bird-watchers drawn to the open moors and coastal woodlands. Small, close-knit communities maintain village halls, pubs and seasonal shows, and the landscape still shows strong medieval and estate-era influences as a quiet gateway between the moors and nearby coastal towns such as Whitby.
