Yarm is a compact, picturesque market town in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees, perched on a meander of the River Tees with high, wooded banks and riverside walks. Its bumpily paved Yarm High Street is notable for Georgian and Victorian facades, independent shops, cafes and pubs, while the old stone Yarm Bridge and the striking 19th-century Yarm Viaduct give the town a distinctive skyline.
Historically a medieval market and upstream port, Yarm retains a strong sense of local identity and a lively social scene of markets, riverside dining and community events. Today it’s often seen as an affluent commuter and retail centre for the wider Tees Valley and nearby Durham and Teesside employment areas, combining heritage appeal with modern leisure and service-based businesses.
