Billingham is a working town on the north bank of the River Tees, within the borough of Stockton-on-Tees in the Teesside area and historically part of County Durham. It sits in the industrial ribbon east of Stockton and west of Hartlepool, forming part of the broader Teesside conurbation while being close to riverside marshes and coastal nature sites.
The town grew rapidly in the early 20th century around large chemical works (later part of ICI), becoming known for fertiliser and synthetic ammonia production; that industrial heritage still shapes its economy and landscape, including an extensive industrial estate. Cultural life is grounded in local institutions such as the Billingham Forum and the unusually named football club Billingham Synthonia (a nod to the town’s chemical past), while nearby marshes and Seal Sands nature areas provide rich birdlife and a contrast to the industrial skyline.
