Thornaby-on-Tees is a town on the south bank of the River Tees, within the borough of Stockton-on-Tees and forming part of the wider Teesside conurbation; it sits close to Middlesbrough and benefits from good transport links via Thornaby railway station and nearby A19/A66, with riverside paths and the Tees Barrage close to hand.
Historically it expanded in the Victorian era with shipbuilding, engineering and chemicals on the Tees, and the former RAF Thornaby airfield is a notable local landmark from early 20th-century aviation. Today Thornaby mixes residential neighbourhoods, light industry and retail, with ongoing regeneration projects and easy access to the cultural and leisure amenities of neighbouring Stockton and Middlesbrough.
