Heck is a small, largely agricultural civil parish in the Selby district of North Yorkshire, centred on the tiny settlements of Great Heck and Little Heck. It occupies the flat arable land of the Vale of York and feels typical of rural eastern Yorkshire, while being within easy reach of larger centres such as Selby and transport links like the M62 and the East Coast Main Line.
Locally the area has been shaped by the nearby coalfield and the now decommissioned Eggborough power station, and it is also known for being the location of the tragic 2001 incident often referred to as the Great Heck rail crash, which remains a significant event in its recent history. Community life is quiet and village-focused, with farming and commuting forming the backbone of the local economy.
