High Abbotside is a sparsely populated upland civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, tucked into the northern side of Wensleydale within the Yorkshire Dales. Its rolling moorland, drystone walls and hay meadows make it a classic Dales landscape and it’s popular with walkers and photographers despite having only a small, scattered community.
The parish’s name recalls lands once held by the abbot of Jervaulx Abbey; historically the economy combined sheep farming with small-scale lead working and quarrying. Today agriculture and tourism dominate, and the area retains a strong rural culture reflected in traditional stone barns, listed buildings and local events rather than urban services.
