Garsdale sits in the upper reaches of the dale in eastern Yorkshire Dales, now administered as part of Westmorland and Furness in England. The parish is a long, sparsely populated valley hemmed by open moorland and the rounded ridges of the Howgill Fells, with a ribbon of scattered farms, drystone walls and small hamlets following the course of the local becks and the A684.
Its character is shaped by hill sheep farming and a steady trickle of walkers and railway enthusiasts who come for the scenery and the famous scenic run along the Settle-Carlisle Railway, served at Garsdale station. There is a strong sense of rural community and history here - the landscape still shows old field patterns and farmsteads, while nearby towns such as Sedbergh and Hawes provide services and markets that knit the parish into the wider Dales economy.
