Melbecks is a rural civil parish in Richmondshire, North Yorkshire, lying within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and largely occupying upper Swaledale along the River Swale. The landscape is classic Dales country - steep-sided valleys, heather moorland, limestone scars and a patchwork of drystone walls and sheep pastures.
The parish includes villages such as Gunnerside and small hamlets and carries traces of a long lead-mining past alongside a still-strong sheep-farming economy. Today the area combines pastoral life with small-scale tourism - holiday cottages, a village inn, walking routes and historic packhorse bridges - and its tight-knit communities, chapels and village halls help keep local traditions and seasonal events connected to the wider Swaledale cultural scene.
