The parish of Middleham sits in Wensleydale in North Yorkshire, England, surrounded by the rolling hills and moorland of the Yorkshire Dales. Its skyline is dominated by the ruins of Middleham Castle, a medieval stronghold closely associated with Richard, Duke of Gloucester - later King Richard III - who spent much of his youth there, and the compact historic centre gives the parish a strong sense of its past.
Today Middleham is better known for horse racing, with numerous training yards and stables that make it one of Britain’s leading centres for thoroughbred training; tourism, local shops, pubs and the parish church help sustain a small, close‑knit community, and race-related commerce and annual events play a big part in the local economy and social life.
