The village of Skipwith sits in the Selby district of North Yorkshire, a short drive south of York and within easy reach of Selby. It is best known for Skipwith Common, a nationally important lowland heath and acid mire designated as a national nature reserve and SSSI, which preserves rare heathland habitats and species such as nightjars and adders and provides a striking open landscape amid the surrounding farmland.
Skipwith is a small, largely agricultural community with medieval roots - the village name has long associations with the historic Skipwith family - and retains a compact, village-centred social life with a parish church and local amenities. Many residents commute to nearby towns, but farming, conservation and local events continue to shape the character and economy of the parish.
