Beverley is a historic market town and county town in the East Riding of Yorkshire, set on low-lying ground between the Yorkshire Wolds and the Humber estuary, a short drive from Hull. Its roots go back to the Anglo‑Saxon period around the cult of St John of Beverley, and the town grew up as a religious and market centre with a compact medieval street pattern and a handsome mix of timber‑framed and Georgian architecture.
Key sights include the impressive Gothic parish church of Beverley Minster, the open common known as Beverley Westwood and the long‑running meet at Beverley Racecourse. Today it combines independent shops, cafes and regular markets with a lively calendar of festivals and community events; surrounding fertile farmland supports agriculture and food businesses, while tourism and commuting to Hull also shape the local economy and social life.
