Thirsk is a compact market town in North Yorkshire, England, sitting on the edge of the North York Moors and within the rolling farmland of the Vale of Mowbray. It has medieval roots and a neat historic centre with a long market tradition and Georgian streets, and is best known as the home of veterinary surgeon and writer James Herriot, whose former practice is now a popular museum.
The local economy is still heavily influenced by agriculture and equine interests, with market trading, independent shops and tourism (notably the James Herriot connection and countryside walking) making up much of the trade; the town remains a lively community hub for surrounding villages and a handy base for exploring North Yorkshire.
