Blyth is a coastal town in Northumberland, England, sitting at the mouth of the River Blyth where it meets the North Sea, around 13 miles north‑east of Newcastle upon Tyne. The town has a working harbour and marina, a sandy seafront and the Victorian green of Ridley Park, with estuary sands and dunes that make it a gateway to the Northumberland coast.
Originally a fishing settlement, Blyth expanded in the 19th century as a coal‑exporting port and shipbuilding centre; those industries largely declined in the late 20th century, but the town has been reinventing itself through port redevelopment, offshore wind and renewables activity around the Port of Blyth, light industry and growing leisure and tourism. It retains a distinct local character – visible in community projects and the pride around local sporting clubs such as Blyth Spartans – blending an industrial past with coastal recreation and regeneration efforts.
