Cambois is a small coastal village in Northumberland, England, sitting on the North Sea coast close to Blyth and Ashington by the mouth of the River Blyth. Originally a modest fishing and farming settlement, it expanded in the 19th century as collieries and coal staithes were built to load ships from the estuary; the name is often said to come from a Gaelic phrase meaning “crooked mouth”, a nod to the river mouth.
After the decline of deep coal mining and coastal industry, Cambois faced the economic shifts common to the North-East, leaving an industrial waterfront next to sand flats and estuary habitats that attract birdwatchers. The village still carries a strong mining heritage and close-knit community spirit, and in recent years there has been interest in regeneration and renewable‑energy and port‑related activity in the wider Blyth estuary area.
