Whitley Bay is a classic North East seaside town on the North Sea coast in North Tyneside, known for long sandy beaches, a sweeping promenade and the photogenic St Mary's Lighthouse perched on a tidal island at the end of Longsands. It developed as a Victorian resort after the arrival of the railway and still shows that heritage in its seafront architecture; the distinctive domed Spanish City building is a local landmark and focal point for cafés, events and occasional live music.
Today Whitley Bay mixes a tourism and leisure economy - cafés, amusement arcades, watersports and seasonal crowds - with a large residential community who often commute into Newcastle. The town has seen waves of regeneration and remains popular for family days out, surfing and local festivals, combining seaside nostalgia with active community life and easy access to other North Tyneside and Tyneside attractions.
