Blyth sits on the North Sea coast of Northumberland at the mouth of the River Blyth, with a working harbour, sandy promenades and a strong maritime feel. It lies within easy reach of Newcastle and grew up around its estuary, with a coastline of beaches and cliffs that still shapes much local life and leisure.
Historically the town expanded in the Victorian era on the back of coal export, shipbuilding and engineering; more recently the port and industrial sites have been adapted for offshore wind and other renewables. That blend of industrial heritage and coastal community is reflected in local culture and sport, not least the well‑known non‑league club Blyth Spartans, and a steady programme of heritage and regeneration projects aimed at keeping the town connected to both its maritime past and a changing economy.
