Ashfield is a local government district in north Nottinghamshire, made up of a cluster of former coalfield towns and surrounding villages. The area combines compact urban centres such as Sutton-in-Ashfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield with stretches of open countryside on the fringe of Sherwood Forest, giving a noticeable contrast between town and green space.
Historically the district grew around coal mining and light industry, and the legacy of that heritage is visible in former pit sites and workers’ housing; the end of deep mining prompted a period of economic transition. Today the local economy mixes retail and small manufacturing with employment linked to larger centres nearby, and many people commute to Nottingham and Mansfield or travel further across the East Midlands.
Socially and culturally, Ashfield has a strong community feel with local festivals, sports clubs and heritage projects that celebrate its industrial past, while investment in regeneration and green infrastructure aims to improve opportunities and quality of life. There are still challenges in parts of the district, but ongoing redevelopment, community initiatives and easy access to surrounding countryside give it a distinctive and evolving character.
