Misterton is a village and civil parish in Bassetlaw, Nottinghamshire, set close to the county boundary with Lincolnshire and lying on the banks of the River Idle. Its low-lying landscape opens onto wetland and floodplain habitat – part of the Idle Valley area – which gives the locality a strong ecological interest and good opportunities for birdwatching. The local economy remains largely agricultural with some small businesses and commuters travelling to nearby towns such as Retford, while historically the village benefited from river trade and milling along the Idle and nearby Trent waterways.
Socially and culturally Misterton keeps a compact village centre of traditional cottages, a village hall, pubs and a primary school, and an active community calendar of fetes and sports clubs that help bind the parish together. There are also pockets of historic buildings and a conservation-minded approach to the landscapes and habitats around the village, reflecting both its rural character and its riverside heritage near places like West Stockwith.
