The village of West Stockwith sits on the east bank of the River Trent in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, directly opposite East Stockwith in Lincolnshire. Historically it grew as a modest river port and transhipment point for coal and agricultural produce, and that riverside heritage is still evident in the wharves, moorings and the broad floodplain of reedbeds and mudflats that attract birdwatchers and anglers.
Today West Stockwith is a small, close-knit community where farming and commuting sit alongside leisure boating and nature-based tourism; waterside cottages and boat moorings give it a relaxed, rural character, while nearby market towns such as Gainsborough and Retford supply services and links to the wider region.
