Saddleworth West & Lees sits on the eastern edge of the Oldham borough in Greater Manchester, where the urban fringe meets the rolling Pennines. The ward covers the historic mill town of Lees and neighbouring settlements, so the streets mix stone-built terraces and Victorian chapels with pockets of open countryside and moorland on the fringe of long-distance walking routes.
Like much of Saddleworth, the area bears the imprint of the 19th‑century textile industry but today functions largely as a residential and commuter area for Manchester and nearby towns, while retaining a strong local community spirit, independent shops, pubs and clubs. Its proximity to upland scenery makes it popular with walkers and cyclists and gives a blend of semi-rural character with easy access to urban amenities.
