Mossley in Tameside, Greater Manchester is a compact former mill town set on the edge of the Pennines, lying in a steep valley beside the River Tame and around ten miles east of Manchester. Its streets are lined with stone-built Victorian terraces and former mill buildings, and historically the town was notable for straddling county boundaries, once touching Lancashire, Cheshire and the West Riding of Yorkshire.
Today Mossley combines a strong local community and independent high street with the practicalities of a commuter town and some light industry; it is also valued for ready access to countryside and walking routes on nearby Saddleworth Moor, which gives it a quieter, semi-rural feel despite proximity to the urban core.
