Dorchester-on-Thames, in South Oxfordshire, Oxfordshire, sits attractively on the banks of the River Thames where it meets the River Thame. The village occupies a site with Roman and early Anglo-Saxon roots and was once an important early Christian centre and bishopric; its medieval Dorchester Abbey - largely Norman and Gothic in fabric - remains the architectural and historic focus, set among winding streets and riverside meadows.
Nowadays the parish combines a mainly rural, agricultural economy with tourism and a number of small businesses, while proximity to Oxford makes it home to some commuters. Community life is centred on the abbey, the village hall and local pubs, and outdoor pursuits such as walking the Thames Path and enjoying the riverside landscape are a big part of its social character.
