The village of Charney Bassett sits in the gently rolling farmland of the Vale of White Horse in Oxfordshire, close to the former county boundary with Berkshire (it was transferred from Berkshire to Oxfordshire in 1974). Its roots are medieval and the settlement still shows a compact cluster of historic buildings, including a former manor house and an ancient parish church set among hedged lanes and pasture.
The local economy remains largely agricultural, with small farms and traditional cottages, although many residents now commute to nearby towns. Social life is village-centred around the church and village hall, and the area’s preserved rural character and scenic lanes make it popular with walkers and anyone interested in local heritage.
