Irlam is a suburban area in the City of Salford, in Greater Manchester, lying on the south bank of the Manchester Ship Canal close to the confluence with the River Irwell. It sits west of central Manchester and combines stretches of canalside and riverside green space with mixed housing, giving it a semi-rural feel despite being part of the urban conurbation.
Once a small village, Irlam grew rapidly with the arrival of the canal and railways and developed a strong industrial character – shipbuilding, chemical and engineering works shaped its economy through the 19th and 20th centuries. Today it functions largely as a commuter neighbourhood with local shops, community groups and pleasant waterside walks, while traces of its industrial past remain visible in the landscape and road layout.
