Urmston is a suburban town in the borough of Trafford, in Greater Manchester, sitting about a few miles west of Manchester city centre. Once a small agricultural village, it grew rapidly with the arrival of the railway in the 19th century and today is well connected by regular rail services to Manchester and beyond; the town also lies close to the floodplain of the River Mersey, giving it a string of pleasant parks and riverside walks.
Urmston keeps a compact, village‑like centre with a strong independent retail and dining scene, active amateur arts groups and community events, and predominantly residential neighbourhoods of Victorian and interwar housing. Economically it functions largely as a commuter base for the city while retaining local shops, schools and green space that make it popular with families and professionals who value both convenience and a sense of local community.
