The small, remote upland village and civil parish of Bettws-y-Crwyn sits on the border of Shropshire and Powys in western England. At one of the higher elevations in the county it occupies rolling moorland and pasture with wide views across the Marches; its Welsh‑derived name (betws = prayer‑house, crwyn of uncertain meaning, often glossed as "skins" or "hides") reflects the long borderland history of the area.
The local economy is dominated by hill farming, especially sheep, and the parish has a very small, tight‑knit population clustered around an historic parish church. Services are limited so residents often look to nearby market towns such as Bishop's Castle and Clun for shops and schools, while walkers and birdwatchers are drawn to the quiet lanes, drystone walls and sweeping skies that give the place much of its character.
