Shrewsbury is the historic county town of Shropshire, set on a dramatic loop of the River Severn that gives the town a distinctive peninsula layout and plenty of riverside walks. The medieval street plan survives in a core of narrow lanes and hundreds of listed buildings, with notable landmarks such as Shrewsbury Castle, Shrewsbury Abbey and the Georgian terraces around The Quarry, while the town is famous as the childhood home of Charles Darwin and for The Mount, his family home.
Today the place combines a strong tourism and service economy with lively independent shops, markets and regular festivals including a well‑regarded flower and arts programme; education and public administration are also important local employers, and nearby RAF Shawbury contributes a defence presence. Socially it feels like a busy market town with a thriving cultural life and plenty of outdoor green space, making it popular with residents and visitors alike.
