Worthen is a small rural village in Shropshire, in western England, set amid rolling countryside on the edge of the county’s uplands and within easy reach of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It forms part of a larger civil parish made up of scattered hamlets and farmsteads and is characterised by stone cottages, a parish church and a compact village core.
Historically the local economy has been based on mixed farming, with pockets of former lead mining and quarrying in neighbouring areas such as Shelve and the Stiperstones that have left industrial archaeology and shaped the landscape. Today agriculture, small-scale tourism and local services are important, and a village hall, pub and seasonal events help sustain a close-knit community popular with walkers and people seeking country living.
