Dunster is a compact medieval village in Somerset, England, sitting on the steep shoulder of the valley carved by the River Avill at the southern edge of Exmoor. The village looks out towards the Bristol Channel and nearby Minehead, and its narrow lanes, stone cottages and hilltop position give a strong sense of place and landscape.
Historically a wool-trading centre - the octagonal Yarn Market dates from that era - Dunster is dominated by Dunster Castle and benefits from heritage attractions such as the West Somerset Railway; tourism, small-scale agriculture and local crafts now underpin the economy. Community events like the popular candlelit winter festival, National Trust stewardship of the castle grounds and a cluster of independent shops and tearooms keep the village lively without losing its historic character.
