Burnham-on-Sea is a small seaside town on the coast of Somerset in England, sitting where the estuary meets the Bristol Channel. It’s best known for its vast tidal flats and one of the highest tidal ranges in the world, which give the shoreline a very different character at high and low tide; the unusual short wooden "low" lighthouse and taller tower on the promenade are local landmarks. The long sandy beach, promenades and the risk of fast-moving tides and mud make it a place where lifeboat services are important and where beach safety is taken seriously.
Historically Burnham grew in the 19th century as a Victorian resort and small port, and today its economy leans on tourism, retirement living and local services while retaining a working harbour feel around the mouth of the River Parrett. The town hosts traditional seaside events, has a mix of period architecture and modern amenities, and appeals to day-trippers and families as well as longer-stay visitors exploring the Somerset coast and nearby countryside.
