Watchet is a compact harbour town on the north‑west coast of Somerset, sitting at the mouth of the River Washford and looking out across the Bristol Channel. Its location on the fringes of Exmoor and the South West Coast Path gives it a rugged maritime character - cliffs, tidal sands and dramatic sea views make it popular with walkers and coastal visitors.
Historically the town grew around its small port and a 19th‑century trade in ores and limestone, and that maritime past is still visible in the harbour, shipwrecks offshore and a local maritime museum. Today the economy is driven by tourism, independent shops, a modest fishing and boating scene, and a lively arts and community presence that blends historic features with seaside cafés and galleries.
