Coalpit Heath is a small former coal‑mining village in South Gloucestershire, sitting on the high ground to the north‑east of Bristol. Its name reflects a long history of coal extraction that shaped 19th‑century development - you can still find remnants of old pits and spoil heaps in the landscape - and the village grew up around rows of miners’ cottages, chapels and the colliery infrastructure.
Today Coalpit Heath feels like a well‑kept commuter village close to Yate, with a village hall, clubs and sports facilities, a primary school and local pubs, yet it remains edged by countryside and within easy reach of the Cotswolds. The local economy has shifted away from mining to a mix of local services and residents who travel into nearby towns and cities, while community events and green spaces help maintain a strong village identity.
