Map of the UK

The metropolitan borough of South Tyneside sits on the south bank of the River Tyne where it meets the North Sea. It is part of the wider Tyneside conurbation and includes coastal towns such as South Shields, Jarrow and Hebburn.

Historically the area was shaped by coal mining, shipbuilding and other heavy industries; social memory is marked by the Jarrow March of 1936 and the medieval monastic site of Monkwearmouth–Jarrow Abbey associated with the Venerable Bede. Many former industrial sites have been redeveloped, but terraces, docks and a strong working‑class culture remain visible in the landscape.

Today the local economy mixes services, retail and light manufacturing with a growing tourism offer focused on beaches, coastal walks and landmarks like Souter Lighthouse and the Marsden cliffs. Good transport links, including the Tyne and Wear Metro, connect the borough to Newcastle and Sunderland, while maritime museums, festivals and fish markets keep its coastal character lively.
