The villages of East Boldon and West Boldon sit in the borough of South Tyneside, on the north-eastern edge of the old county of Durham, a short distance inland from the coast and within easy reach of South Shields, Sunderland and Newcastle. East Boldon has a local railway station on the Durham Coast corridor giving regular regional links, and both places largely function as residential, commuter villages with a mix of local shops, pubs and active community groups.
Historically the Boldons grew from farming and later coal-mining in nearby Boldon Colliery, and the area features in medieval records such as the Boldon Book associated with the bishopric of Durham. Today they retain a village feel with green spaces, community halls and annual events, combining a strong local identity with easy access to the jobs, culture and coast of the North East.
