Whitburn is a coastal village in the borough of South Tyneside in the north-east of England, sitting on the North Sea between South Shields and Sunderland. It’s known for its sandy seafront and dunes - locally popular for walks, beach-going and surfing around Whitburn Bents - while the compact village centre contains a mix of Victorian terraces and modern housing.
Historically the community developed from farming and nearby coal-mining, which has left a working-class character and local pride; today many residents commute to nearby urban centres such as Newcastle and Sunderland, and the village sustains a lively social scene with clubs, pubs and seasonal events that draw visitors from the surrounding coast.
