Boldon Colliery is a compact former mining village in the borough of South Tyneside, in Tyne and Wear, England, situated on the southern fringe of the Tyne estuary not far from South Shields and Sunderland. Its position gives easy access to both riverside and coastal landscapes while remaining close to the larger urban centres of the Tyneside conurbation.
Built up around a coal pit in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the community still bears the imprint of that industrial past in its layout, terraced housing and local institutions; after the colliery closed the village gradually became more of a residential and commuter area. There’s a strong local identity, active community groups and sports clubs that celebrate the mining heritage, and plenty of green routes and parks for walking into the surrounding countryside.
