Billingham sits on the north bank of the River Tees in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees, part of the wider Teesside conurbation and historically within County Durham. It grew rapidly in the 20th century as a planned chemical town after major investment by ICI, so its layout and economy were long shaped by heavy industry; since the late 20th century there has been considerable change with deindustrialisation followed by regeneration and the development of business parks and light industry.
Locally there’s a strong community feel with leisure and cultural facilities such as the Billingham Forum and grassroots sport including Billingham Synthonia. On the edge of town reclaimed industrial land now hosts nature reserves like RSPB Saltholme, notable for birdlife and walking routes, giving an interesting contrast between industrial heritage and wildlife-rich green spaces.
