Chelmondiston is a small village and civil parish in Babergh, Suffolk, England, set on the southern side of the Shotley Peninsula and looking out over the River Orwell estuary a few miles to the south‑east of Ipswich. The parish includes the riverside hamlet of Pin Mill, a popular spot for sailing, traditional riverside inns and mooring boats, which gives the area a distinctly maritime feel.
The character is largely rural, with arable farms, historic cottages and a close‑knit village community; tourism and leisure boating around the estuary complement a local economy still rooted in agriculture. Salt marshes and mudflats along the Orwell attract wildlife and birdwatchers, while historic churches and vernacular buildings hint at the parish’s long agricultural and maritime past.
