The village of Shotley in the district of Babergh, Suffolk, England sits at the tip of the Shotley Peninsula between the River Orwell and the River Stour. From the shoreline around Shotley Gate there are striking views across the estuaries to Harwich and Felixstowe, and the patchwork of salt marshes and mudflats makes it a popular spot for birdwatching, sailing and coastal walks.
Shotley’s character was long shaped by the Royal Navy training establishment HMS Ganges at Shotley Gate, and vestiges of that maritime past sit alongside working boatyards, small marinas, farms and a village core. Today the community is quietly mixed - local events, a church and village facilities sustain social life while tourism, boating and commuting to nearby towns contribute to the local economy.
