Sudbury is a historic market town in Babergh, Suffolk, England, set on the banks of the River Stour at the edge of the Stour Valley and close to the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town retains a compact medieval centre of timber‑framed and Georgian buildings, with attractive water meadows and riverside walks that reflect its rural setting.
It is famous as the birthplace of the painter Thomas Gainsborough and is home to Gainsborough's House, while historically the local economy grew from weaving and the silk industry. Today Sudbury mixes independent shops, antiques, light manufacturing and tourism, hosts regular markets and community events, and is linked by the branch line to Marks Tey.
