The coastal parish of Bawdsey sits on the south bank at the mouth of the River Deben in East Suffolk, Suffolk, England. It faces Orford Ness and lies within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB, characterised by soft, eroding cliffs, shingle foreshore and saltmarsh that make it popular with birdwatchers and walkers; a small seasonal foot‑ferry links the hamlet with the Felixstowe side of the estuary.
Although the community is small and largely rural, Bawdsey has an important place in history: Bawdsey Manor was the cradle of Britain’s early radar development in the 1930s and a wartime station, and that heritage is preserved locally for visitors. Today the economy mixes agriculture, low‑key tourism, birdwatching and holiday accommodation, giving the area a quiet village feel with a strong maritime and scientific legacy.
