Butley is a small, quietly rural village and civil parish in East Suffolk, on the fringes of the Suffolk coast in Suffolk, England. It sits beside the tidal Butley Creek and lies close to coastal settlements such as Orford and Aldeburgh, much of the surrounding landscape falling within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB, making it popular with walkers and birdwatchers.
Historically the village is best known for the ruins of Butley Priory, a 12th‑century Augustinian house with links to medieval figures, and the area retains a strong agricultural character alongside small‑scale tourism and coastal recreation. The community is very small and dispersed, with village life shaped by farming, nature conservation and the draw of the nearby coast rather than by any large local industry.
