Dunwich is a small coastal village and civil parish in East Suffolk, Suffolk, England, set on the edge of the North Sea. Once a prosperous medieval port, much of the original town was lost to centuries of coastal erosion and storms, leaving intriguing ruins and artefacts now interpreted at Dunwich Museum. The settlement lies within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB, with shingle beaches, coastal heath and a landscape that still bears the imprint of its dramatic historic decline.
Today Dunwich is a small community whose economy is largely shaped by tourism, conservation and seasonal visitors: walkers, birdwatchers and people exploring the nearby reserves, notably RSPB Minsmere, and the heathland managed by the National Trust at Dunwich Heath. Local character is defined by its sense of vanished grandeur, stories of smuggling and maritime life, a handful of shops and tearooms, and an emphasis on protecting the fragile coastal environment rather than heavy industry.
