Snape is a small village and civil parish in the district of East Suffolk in Suffolk, England, set on the tidal marshes of the River Alde a few miles inland from the North Sea and close to Aldeburgh and the shingle spit of Orford Ness. The landscape of creeks, saltmarsh and reedbeds is important for birds and gives the area a distinctive coastal-rural character.
It is best known for the Victorian buildings of Snape Maltings, converted into an arts centre and concert venue associated with Benjamin Britten and the Aldeburgh Festival; that complex draws visitors, craftspeople and seasonal events, and is a key part of the local economy alongside farming and small-scale tourism. The village itself retains a quiet community feel with historic buildings and strong connections to the region’s maritime and malting heritage.
