Silksworth

The Silksworth ward sits on the western edge of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear, a former coal‑mining village turned suburban community roughly three miles from the city centre. Its history is dominated by the old Silksworth Colliery and the model pit village built for miners - terraces, social clubs and churches still hint at that industrial past even as the area has diversified since the pit closed in the early 1970s.

A defining local asset is Silksworth Park, a large green space with lakes, sports pitches, a golf course and walking trails that draws families and runners from across the city; much of the landscaped parkland sits on reclaimed colliery and estate land. Today the ward mixes social and private housing, has modest local shops and schools, and functions largely as a commuter neighbourhood for Sunderland and the wider north‑east while retaining a strong community identity and active local groups.
