Sunderland sits on the north‑east coast at the mouth of the River Wear in Tyne and Wear, with a broad coastline and popular seafronts at Roker and Seaburn. The river estuary, promenades and a working harbour give the district a distinctive mix of seaside character and industrial waterfront.
Historically the area was shaped by shipbuilding and coal mining, and that industrial past is still visible in bridges, docks and converted warehouse sites.
