Long Ditton is a suburban ward in the borough of Elmbridge, in southwest Surrey, sitting close to the edges of London and neighbouring centres such as Kingston upon Thames and Surbiton. It has a mix of Victorian and 20th‑century housing, pockets of green space and riverside character where the low-lying meadows meet the River Thames; the area is best known as a largely residential, commuter-friendly part of the borough with convenient road and rail links into central London.
The area has medieval roots - its name comes from Old English and the old parish church and several listed buildings hint at a long local history - but most of its character today reflects suburban growth, small local shops, community groups and sports clubs. Economically it is dominated by residents who work elsewhere, with a steady local service sector and active conservation and neighbourhood associations that help preserve its semi-rural pockets and village feel.
