Surrey is a home-counties county to the south-west of London, known for rolling chalk ridges and wooded commons - especially the North Downs and the protected Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with popular spots such as Box Hill. It is drained by tributaries like the River Wey and River Mole, and combines closely settled commuter towns with rural villages and market towns such as Guildford, Dorking and Farnham.
Historically a wealthy county with a mix of stately homes, coaching routes and industrial heritage - for example the motor-racing and aviation innovations at Brooklands in Weybridge - Surrey now hosts technology and professional services hubs around Woking and Guildford, country estates, vineyards (notably around Dorking) and cultural venues. Its high house prices, good transport links into London and plentiful green space give it a reputation for quality of life, while local festivals, theatres and sporting traditions (including horse racing at Epsom) keep a strong local identity.
