Caterham Valley is the lower, more modern part of the twin settlements alongside Caterham on the Hill in the district of Tandridge, Surrey, England. Nestled at the foot of the North Downs, the valley grew up after the arrival of the railway and sits in a shallow basin of predominantly Victorian and later housing with pockets of green space; its railway terminus, Caterham station, gives easy commuter access into London and helps define its character as a town for commuters as well as local families.
Locally the area combines a compact high street of independent shops and cafes with small businesses and community groups, and it keeps a distinct identity from the hilltop settlement despite being contiguous. There are echoes of the town’s military past in the nearby, now redeveloped, Caterham Barracks, and the parish community remains active around villages halls, sports clubs and greenbelt countryside that frames the valley.
